Progesterone Campaign
Progesterone is a type of steroid hormone essential to the female menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Physicians sometimes use progesterone to cause menstrual periods in pre-menopausal women who are not having periods, or to prevent overgrowth in the lining of the uterus in post-menopausal women who are receiving estrogen hormone replacement therapy.
Even though it has some therapeutic uses, an independent, bi-partisan panel of experts determined that Progesterone also causes cancer and reproductive harm. Despite this, creams and supplements containing Progesterone were available without prescription to women across California. The makers of these creams claimed that their products could be used as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy and to prevent or treat numerous diseases, including osteoporosis and cancer. Millions of women were using these products, unaware that they contained harmful ingredients.
To protect women’s health, CWLC filed suit against 35 companies that were manufacturing, distributing or selling over-the-counter supplements or creams containing progesterone. CWLC asked that these companies place labels on their products advising consumers not to use the product without the supervision of a physician. The majority of these companies settled, and agreed to put warning labels on their products.
